THOSE who strolled through Craig-y-Don during Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee weekend may have noticed a beautifully curated display of red, white and blue balloons lining its streets.
It’s all thanks to Ballooning Marvelous, a business started by husband and wife Paul and Amanda Williams last September, which has been so successful it’s allowed them to close their Llanfairfechan gift shop and just focus on their new venture. .
Indeed, what began as a containment project has, understandably, exploded for Paul and Amanda – who aren’t using old balloons either.
The only Qualatex balloon shop in North Wales, they cater for all occasions, from a simple helium foil balloon to more intricate designs and arrangements.
Not only do they have balloons for every budget, custom products are also available upon request.
Paul said: “We had a gift shop in Llanfairfechan, which has now closed, but we were looking for something different to give people.
“So, we did a QBN (Qualatex Balloon Network) course in confinement, and from there, we said to ourselves that we were going to open a shop on our own.
“Craig-y-Don came, so we took it, and because it’s done so well, we closed our shop in Llanfairfechan. In the end, the balloons paid the rent for the Llanfairfechan shop!
“Qualatexes are supposed to be the best balls in the world; that’s what they’re proud of. They are more expensive, but they are of better quality than the others.
While Paul takes care of the business side of things, Amanda is the creative mind – recent projects include a blue archway outside Coffee V cafe during the Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza, and a chocolate bouquet with a balloon on top.
And, of course, the Jubilee Decorations, which were such a hit with the Craig-y-Don community that Ballooning Marvelous settled in seamlessly.

In fact, not only has it helped their own business, but also others in the area.
Paul added: “As a thank you to the local community and businesses who have supported us since our opening, we have decided to give something back by decorating Craig-y-Don for the Jubilee.
“We did balloon columns, with crowns, Welsh balls and Union Jacks. The feedback we’ve received has been phenomenal and overwhelming – it took four days, over 1,200 balloons. and a few late nights!
“We can’t wait to talk to local businesses to see what we can do for Christmas.”
