About The Weitz Company
The Weitz Company of today descends from a small carpentry workshop founded in 1855 in Fort Des Moines, Iowaby Charles H. Weitz, an enterprising German immigrant. As the construction company grew, Charles Weitz passed on his profession, his sense of values and quality to his sons who, in turn, passed on the family business to their children for four generations. Always innovative, The Weitz Company pioneered the development of precast concrete exterior wall construction and became one of the largest producers of architectural precast concrete. During WWII, The Weitz Company supported the war effort by building munitions factories in record time. Weitz became an employee-owned company in March 1995 when 36 shareholders bought the company debt-free from the Weitz family. The number of employee shareholders continued to grow, reaching over 300 by the mid-2000s. The Weitz Company went from one $250 million general contractor to a $1 billion industry leader. In December 2012Weitz was bought by a global engineering and construction contractor Orascom Construction PLCpositioning the company for even more growth and construction opportunities nationally and internationally.
