Meet Tico, the sloth coming to this year’s Balloon Spectacular

posted on

If you see a sloth flying overhead in early March, your eyes aren’t fooling you.

Tico the sloth-shaped hot air balloon will fly over Canberra in all its adorable glory as it joins this year Canberra Hot Air Balloon Show.

Bringing a hazy smile to the sky (and to our hearts), it will create a magical spectacle as it joins the dozens of other hot air balloons that float gently across the morning sky for the annual festival, which runs from 12-20 March. as part of the Enlighten Festival 2022.

The creation of New York brothers Todd and Scott Monahan (the same team behind the Allycorn magical pink unicorn ball), Tico is sure to bring cheers from the crowd.

The Canberra Balloon Spectacular still has a specially shaped balloon joining the range – you might remember a giant T-Rex balloon, a beagle, a frog and the hummingbird – and like sloths have extra vertebrae at the base of their neck which allows for 270° vision, Tico is the perfect balloon to see the full view of Canberra.

With doors opening at 5.45am on Saturday March 12, the Canberra Balloon Spectacular will see balloons inflated and launched from Patrick White Lawns, between the National Library and the lake. Until March 20, for those who braved the dawn, a hot breakfast is served as the balloons take off and drift through the dawn sky. But, as always, announcements regarding the launch and flight of the balloons are made at 6:15 a.m.

With limited places at Patrick White Lawns available, you can also soak up these awe-inspiring views from other vantage points in the city. Don’t forget to pack something warm and be prepared to greet Tico as he passes by…at a pace that could be a lot slower.
