At the Fall/Winter 2022 show in March, Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson took surrealism to new heights with bizarre proportions and unexpected patterns, like the balloon. Among the most portable pieces in the collection was the balloon bra which quickly became cult with A-listers bold enough to wear it.

It’s no surprise that Emma Corrin was the first to fully participate in the Olivier Awards in London last month. She opted for the Loewe mesh dress adorned with nude balloons and paired with the accompanying bra. “This one’s for the gays!” Stylist Harry Lambert wrote in a Instagram post.

This week actress Gabrielle Union was the next to wear the polarizing outfit. Ahead of her Met Gala appearance on Monday, Union shared a series of photographs on social media as she stepped out in Manhattan for dinner, wearing the Spanish brand’s printed kaftan with the balloon bra layered over the top. She paired the ensemble with a sage green Loewe clutch and black stiletto boots.

Just a day earlier, the Bring it on alum was pictured in another Loewe ensemble. The look was a refreshed take on the power suit with long, wide-legged pants – the hem crumpling and trailing on the floor – with a long blazer coat and a little black bra layered underneath.

Party wear in all extremes has returned since the pandemic has slowed and for Anderson, FW/22 has served as a collection that “elicits a reaction, draped dresses with balloon bras, trunk hug- the eye and more balloons, all the way to the heels.” Additionally, Anderson said WWD that he wanted “to push a figure towards something that can be absurd, things that can be irrational”.
