Balloon Fiesta 2022 special shape balloons

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) – Special-shaped balloons are among the biggest stars of the Balloon Fiesta. This year, the 50th Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta will feature 118 special-shaped balloons with 19 new balloons from around the world.

“We are thrilled to welcome back our international guests with some of these really cool special shapes from around the world,” said Sam Parks, Balloon Fiesta’s COO.

Some of the new faces for this year’s Balloon Fiesta include an alien, a screwdriver, a toy car, a flying bus and a flying saucer. It will also feature familiar favorites including Pigasus, Darth Vader, and Airabelle. The Special Shape Rodeo in the morning and the Glowdeo in the evening will take place on Thursday October 6th and Friday October 7th. A full list of special shape balloons can be found here.

“It’s actually the Chinese Year of the Tiger. So obviously we had a new Tiger this year. But you know, coming back, we have Airabelle. The kids still love Airabelle. And she’s from Canada, as well as from CHIC-I-BOOM, which has participated in all the special shape balloon festivals that we have organized since the very beginning,” says Parks.

Balloon Fiesta says one of the benefits of COVID was that it gave engineers more time to design balloons. Sam Parks says you’ll see this attention to detail up close and personal.

“Some of the most unusual shapes you’ve ever seen, I think really COVID has allowed people to stay in their design studios and manufacturing facilities and come up with some really cool shapes. And now they’re ready to show them to the world,” Parks says.

Also, more balloonists can come from different countries this year due to the easing of travel restrictions.
