Atlanta Party Planners Take Balloons to Great Heights with First Balloon Convention in Duluth

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Oscar Baker and his business partner, Lery Massey, aren’t ones to blow things up. Then again, maybe they are.

They hosted the first balloon convention in Georgia, and quite possibly the country.

“It’s really big. It’s really fun, because it’s our very first,” Oscar said.

The ballroom at the Fairfield Inn in Duluth was the center of the party with over 75 registered attendees.

Oscar and Lery can create almost anything with balloons, and they teach others to do it too.

“Last year we held over 17 conventions in different states. We walked everywhere so got a suite. So why not get all of our students together under one roof and do this balloon thing,” Lery said.

They are known as the Bow Tie Crew, co-owners of Lou And Lee’s Events and Designs in Metro Atlanta. In the world of party planning, they are pioneers.

There were a few challenges.

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a shortage of balloons and this year some customers cut their party plans due to inflation. But these guys continue to “puff up”.

“You kind of go back to your childhood. You can do all the things that you could see in your childhood and you can recreate them,” Oscar said.
