Jurgen Klopp has signed a new contract to keep him at Liverpool, but Gary Lineker’s Twitter joke about the German’s quality has been misinterpreted by some followers.

Gary Lineker’s Twitter remark didn’t go as he intended

Gary Lineker’s sarcastic remark about Jurgen Klopp didn’t go as planned on social media after the Liverpool boss signed a new contract at Anfield.

Reports started circulating on Thursday that the German was due to extend his contract with the Reds. Lineker replied to a tweet and joked, “I don’t know what they see in him.” Klopp’s credentials cannot be questioned after delivering the Premier League and Champions League during his tenure.

However, Lineker’s witty remark didn’t get the reception he may have been looking for. A fan fired back and said, “He’s a great manager, Gary” to which the TV presenter replied, “Really? You think so?” Lineker was also warned that his remarks would be taken badly, to which he replied: “I hope so”.

Lineker has regularly complimented Klopp and his team, especially in recent seasons. The German admitted his decision to stay put was partly down to his wife’s desire to stay at Liverpool. Klopp could still lead the Reds to a quadruple this season having already won the Carabao Cup.

The Merseysiders continue to invest wisely and seek to retain their flagships, which keeps the team competitive for years to come. Klopp is central to their plans and sees a lot of potential in the current squad and the club.

He told the Liverpool website “I had to ask myself the question: is it good for Liverpool that I stay longer? Together with my two assistants, Pep Lijnders and Pete Krawietz, we came to the conclusion that it was a ‘Yes!’ There is still a freshness to us as a club and that gives me energy.
