Dramatic moment huge Exeter Balloons and Tunes hot air balloon narrowly misses home

Locals watched in awe and shock last night as hot air balloons descended over his village, one narrowly missing a chimney and another nearly landing on a road just 200m from the highway . The new two-day Exeter Balloons and Tunes Festival event took place over the weekend at Powderham Castle, and it promised up to 15 balloons, live music, craft stalls and fun family activities.

However, due to weather conditions, no balloons were able to take off on Saturday 7 May. Instead, the nightglow event saw the anchored balloons line up on the ground as the pilots turned on the burners to keep the balloons inflated with hot air.

Yesterday the weather had improved and the balloons were able to lift off and fill the sky over Powderham and were seen heading towards the Exe Estuary. Residents of nearby Exminster were treated to unexpected scenes of balloons flying overhead, and also very low to the ground.

Steve Godbeer was among those who took to the streets to watch the show, but he never expected to see how far a balloon would fly over his house just before 8 p.m.

He recalls: “We were sitting in our house watching television and we could hear the sound of the gas in the balloons and many people from the village had gathered outside our living room window to watch them. We are Went out and saw a balloon right by our chimney. How he missed it, I don’t know.

“It was so close you could even see the person in the basket. He looked very relaxed and didn’t look worried at all. I think he was showing up. It made the night of the children watching him.

“There was also another balloon about 300 yards from our house which we followed and saw land on the side of the road in Reddaway Drive about 200 yards from the M5 bridge, so that might have been a bit of a problem. Again he seemed very relaxed and I think he was showing up too and just had a bit of a laugh.

“The landing seemed controlled and he just wrapped the ball up and put it on his trailer and went on his merry way. It was great to see and I think we saw more of it here than at Powderham!”
